Hyla Woods is a family-owned business caring for four working, experimental forests in the northern Oregon Coast Range totaling approximately 1,200 acres. Using positive impact forestry methods, we aim to grow ecologically complex, economically viable, responsibly operated forests. Our wood is sold in both log form and as finished products, milled in the forest and dried in our solar dry kiln. We invite and welcome your involvement.
Since 1986 we’ve owned three working forests located roughly one hour’s drive west of Portland, Oregon. In 2026 we added an additional forest. Our involvement depends on two generations of the family, builds on the experiences of six generations, and spans all aspects of forest work from tree planting, forest restoration, control of invasive plants, and forest health monitoring, to harvesting, processing, and selling finished products.
In working to develop approaches that work as well in the long run as they do in the short run, we continue to be active learners who approach our work with humility, restraint, respect, and good humor.
Our forest are managed based on the principles of responsible forestry. This includes responsibilities to climate, species, community, water, wood products, and innovation. In addition, Hyla Woods is FSC®-certified forest (FSC-C008225). You can learn more about FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) certification on their website – https://us.fsc.org/
On the ground, our forestry looks different than business as usual. We manage diverse, complex forests through a combination of variable density thinning, variable retention and shelterwood harvests. We avoid clearcutting and, unlike traditional forestry, do not have a fixed rotation length. Our forests are thinned many times as they grow, promoting forest health, diversity, and structural complexity. Across our ownership, this approach stores roughly double the amount of carbon stored on an average acre of comparable forestland in the region, while also providing unique habitat, recreational opportunities, and high quality wood products.
Hyla Woods forests are generally open for non-motorized walk-in recreational access unless posted otherwise. Hunting and gathering are permitted with permission only.
